Mild steel is a low-carbon steel alloy containing between 0.05 and 0.25 percent carbon by weight. Press Brake Bending
Press brake bending forms flat laser cut mild steel blanks into angles, channels, box sections, flanges, and other bent profiles. Our press brake handles bend lengths up to 3.2 metres with 300 tonnes of forming force, covering the full range of mild steel sheet and plate bending that most fabrication jobs require.
Because cutting and bending both happen in our workshop, the tolerance from the laser cut blank carries directly into the bend setup. There’s no separate supplier handoff, no rehandling cost, and no tolerance variation introduced by transport between two different facilities.
Fibre Laser Welding
Laser welding joins mild steel components using a focused laser beam, producing a narrow, precise weld with significantly less heat distortion than conventional MIG or arc welding. On components where post-weld geometry needs to stay within tight tolerances, or where the weld appearance is visible in the finished product, laser welding produces a cleaner result with less secondary grinding than conventional processes.

CNC Lathe Turning

Shafts, pins, bushings, spacers, and threaded components that form part of a larger mild steel assembly are machined in-house alongside the sheet metal elements. This means the complete assembly, cut, bent, welded, and machined components included, comes from one workshop rather than requiring a separate machining supplier.
What Mild Steel Grades Are Used in Fabrication?
Not all mild steel is identical in specification, and the grade matters for certain applications.
S235 and S275 are the most common structural mild steel grades used in general fabrication across South Africa. They cover most bracket, frame, enclosure, and structural plate applications without requiring a specific engineering specification.
S355 is a higher-yield structural grade used where greater strength is required at the same section thickness. It is specified in structural engineering applications where the load requirements exceed what S235 or S275 can carry at the standard thickness.
A36 and equivalent grades appear in some agricultural and machinery applications and are broadly comparable to S235 for general fabrication purposes.
For most fabrication jobs, the grade does not need to be specified by the buyer. The correct specification is selected based on the application and confirmed at quote stage. Mild steel rusts. This is the single most important practical consideration in specifying mild steel for any application, and it is where many mild steel fabrication projects run into long-term problems when the finish is not correctly specified upfront.
Rust is not a failure of the steel itself. It is a failure of the finish or the absence of one. Mild steel in a dry, indoor environment with no moisture exposure can last decades without any surface treatment. The same steel in a coastal environment or exposed to regular moisture will show rust within weeks without protection.
The correct approach is to specify the finish alongside the fabrication, not as an afterthought after the component is made. The most common finish options for mild steel fabrication are:
Powder coating is the most practical and durable finish for most outdoor mild steel fabrication in South Africa. A correctly applied powder coat, over a properly prepared surface, gives good corrosion resistance and a clean aesthetic finish in a wide range of colours. Hot dip galvanising gives the most comprehensive corrosion protection for structural mild steel components that will live in harsh or coastal environments. Mild steel costs significantly less per kilogram than stainless steel. For indoor or sheltered applications, or any application where a powder coat or galvanised finish is acceptable, mild steel is the economical and correct specification. Stainless steel makes sense when a coating-free finish is required, when the component will be exposed to conditions that would degrade a powder coat rapidly, or when the application specifically requires the aesthetic of bare stainless steel.
