The laser follows the programmed path precisely, burning or vaporising the material along the cut lines to produce the finished pattern. The result is a panel with clean-edged cut-outs that allow light and air to pass through while providing varying degrees of visual privacy depending on the density of the pattern.

Pattern and Design Options
There is no standard catalogue of patterns we cut from. Every screen is cut from whatever vector file the client provides or develops. That said, most screen design briefs fall into a few broad categories:
Geometric patterns are the most common and the most versatile. Repeating squares, hexagons, diamonds, triangles, and combinations thereof scale across any panel size, suit most architectural styles, and are straightforward to produce as a DXF file. They read as contemporary and intentional at a distance and hold their detail up close.
Organic and botanical patterns use curved, plant-inspired forms including leaves, branches, grasses, and floral motifs. These are more complex to draw and cut than geometric patterns but the visual impact in a garden or outdoor context is significant. They work particularly well in natural materials like corten or raw steel where the organic pattern and the material character reinforce each other.
Abstract and freeform patterns include custom artwork, texture-inspired designs, and non-repeating compositions. These are typically developed by a designer or architect and supplied to us as a production-ready DXF file.
Logo and brand integration where a company mark, monogram, or word mark is incorporated into the screen design. This is common for hospitality properties, retail environments, and residential properties where a personalised element is part of the brief.

Materials for Laser Cut Screens
Mild steel powder coated is the standard specification for most decorative and privacy screen applications. It is cost-effective, holds fine pattern detail well, and takes powder coat in any RAL colour cleanly. Black and dark charcoal are the most popular choices for contemporary architectural screens. The powder coat provides corrosion resistance for most Western Cape environments when properly applied. Mild steel screens in exposed coastal positions will eventually show rust at cut edges if the powder coat degrades — for those positions, stainless steel or aluminium is the more appropriate long-term specification.
Mild steel galvanised is the right specification for screens in exposed outdoor positions or coastal environments where the longevity of a powder coat finish is a concern. The galvanised finish can be painted over if a specific colour is required, or left as-supplied for a more industrial aesthetic.
Stainless steel grade 304 produces screens that require no coating and no maintenance, with a natural brushed or mill finish that suits contemporary architectural applications. It costs more per square metre than mild steel but removes the ongoing refinishing requirement. Corten steel is worth mentioning as an increasingly popular option for garden and outdoor screens in South Africa. Corten is a weathering steel that develops a controlled, stable rust patina on its surface rather than the progressive, destructive rust that affects mild steel. Sizing and Panel Dimensions
Laser cut screens are produced in flat panels up to the size of our cutting bed. For large screens that exceed the cutting bed dimensions, the design is split into sections that are then installed side by side or overlapping on site. This is standard practice for large facade panels and boundary wall screens and is invisible in the finished installation when the panel joints are planned into the design from the start.
Standard sheet sizes in most materials align with common screen dimensions, and designing the screen around standard sheet sizes reduces material waste and keeps the cost down. If your screen dimensions are constrained by the installation position, supply the exact dimensions and we’ll work around them.
Thickness for decorative screens typically runs from 1.5mm to 3mm for most residential applications. Security screens are heavier, typically 3mm to 5mm depending on the opening and the load requirements. Facade cladding panels are usually 2mm to 3mm to balance rigidity with weight.
How the Process Works
A laser cut screen job starts with your panel dimensions, your pattern, your material, your thickness, and your finish requirement. If you have a DXF file, send it. If you have a sketch or a description, we’ll advise on what’s needed to get it to production-ready state.
We review the file before cutting to confirm the pattern is appropriate for the material and thickness, that no features are smaller than the minimum achievable cut size, and that the panel structure is sound — a very dense pattern in thin material can produce a panel that is structurally weak if the remaining material between cut-outs is too narrow. We flag these issues before cutting rather than discovering them on the finished panel.
Once confirmed, the screen is cut, edges are cleaned if needed, and the panel goes to powder coat or galvanising if a finish is required. Powder coat and galvanising are applied by our finishing partners and add to the lead time — factor this into your project timeline when planning.
